When it comes to learning a new language, Duolingo isn’t the only app in town. Personally, I turn to Ling instead. The reason’s probably simpler than you think.
Duolingo Doesn’t Offer the Language I Need
Duolingo a well-known way to learn over 40 languages. That seems like a big number, and it does cover many of the most widely-spoken languages across the world.
Still, there are thousands of languages out there, and Duolingo doesn’t even cover the 40 most popular. I want to learn Telugu, which is one of the major native languages of India and within the top 20 most popular languages in terms of native speakers. Most of those speakers may live in India, but Telugu is one of the fastest growing languages here in the US. My wife speaks it, along with my in-laws.
That’s how I discovered Ling as an alternative to Duolingo. Ling helps me learn Telugu. Like Duolingo, Ling also offers over 40 languages, but it covers more Asian and eastern European languages than its competitor.
Ling Has a Much Cheaper Option
If you’re prepared to stick with Ling, then it is substantially less expensive than Duolingo. This doesn’t seem true on the surface. After all, Duolingo offers a free, ad-supported plan. Ling offers a free trial but requires you pay up. Ling’s monthly price is also a few dollars more than Duolingo’s, and it doesn’t provide a family plan.
So how is it cheaper? Ling offers a lifetime subscription for $150. That’s roughly the cost of one year of paying monthly or two years if you pay annually. That’s quite a bit to commit upfront, but it’s a bargain if you like what you see.
Ling Is Good Enough
What I can say is that, so far, Ling has been good enough. The app is easy to dive into. The entire experience feels highly polished. You get to hear a diversity of speakers. In a sea of low-budget language learning apps, this is more praise than you might think.
If Duolingo is working for you, awesome! By all means, stick with it. But if, like me, you don’t see the language you’re looking for, or you don’t think Duolingo is as good as it used to be, check out Ling.
